About Ellicott City, MD

A bewitchingly historic, albeit unincorporated, 30-square-mile community in Maryland's Howard County, Ellicott City was founded by the industrious Ellicott brothers as a mill town in 1772. The five-block Old Town district holds state-designated \historic place\ status, and despite its lack of formal incorporation, Ellicott City is the county seat. A bit of an odd duck, with its mixture of historic urban and rural, English village-like neighborhoods, Ellicott City is a touristy town and one of Maryland's most affluent communities.
