About Washington, DC

Washington, D.C. is the seat of government in the United States and the place where American history is made. This busy city, which is technically a Federal district, has been the capital of the United States since 1791. Over 600,000 people live in D.C., but the population balloons to over a million during the workweek, when people come from nearby suburbs to do the business that keeps the country running.

  • George Washington University

Riddle: What is sometimes red, sometimes blue, and educated all over? Hint: It’s not a class pet chameleon. Give up? It’s a GW student!

    Educated All Over

Those that attend George Washington University are of the red, blue or somewhere-in-between “political persuasion,” and go to GW for the experience of living in the heart of D.C. and to take advantage of the school’s stellar programs. Whether you are in the famous Elliott School of International Affairs, study in the political science department, or are in medical school, your major will be supplemented with a second degree in D.C. Being at G.W. will teach you the ins and outs of the city since the school’s Foggy Bottom location is shared with the White House, the Smithsonian, and political monuments up the yin yang. Students are highly engaged with the community around them, and most take part in internship programs throughout the city while in school. Learning in a hands-on way gives students applicable knowledge in their field, as well as an impressive resume. To learn more about the school and its relationship to the city, visit the GW’s official site at. The only downside to D.C. seems to be the outrageous cost of living. Fortunately for you, MyNewPlace is coming to the rescue!

The (Political) Science of Living Off Campus

D.C is notorious for its high renting rates, and though Foggy Bottom is a vibrant commercial area, it is not necessarily geared toward residents. This does not stop students from venturing out into the beyond after their second required year of dorm life. Because G.W. is so intertwined with the city, much of Foggy Bottom has a young feel to it and caters to the student culture. Living off-campus in D.C. is a unique experience, forcing one to assert independence, and is definitely worth the cost. To lessen the blow of rent, consider looking for an apartment with roommates. To help you in your search for a both affordable and desirable space, check out our apartment search guides. Getting to and from your new apartment will be easy, since the orange and blue lines of the Foggy Bottom Metro will take you pretty much where ever you need to go. The circulator also proves to be helpful in times of traffic, since it is a one dollar bus line that goes all around the northern part of campus. Don’t forget about Capital Bikeshare, which allows you a key to pick up a bike at any station and ride to a destination station. Warning: Foggy Bottom is the lowest point of D.C. so you will be biking on a slight incline pretty much always; prepare to get in shape and be the hottest person on campus.

Your Forefather Says, “Don’t Party Too Hard”

Being in such a politically-charged town means that your party (get it, party?) fire is being lit all the time. On the weekends, students let off steam and head over to The Froggy Bottom Pub at 2142 Pennsylvania Avenue. It might be a bit divey, but it’s still the homebase for most G.Dubians on a Friday night. For awesome happy hours and the chance to win free drinks, hop over to McFadden’s at 2401 Pennsylvania Ave.

  • Howard University

    Welcome To Howard University

Howard University is located in our nation's capital, Washington, D.C. While the school is a "historically black university"—it was founded after the Civil War as a seminary school for African American males—it is nevertheless open to all people regardless of race, gender, or religion. History is an important aspect of Howard; the university played an important role in the Civil Rights Movement, and Alain Locke, a former professor of Philosophy at Howard, is thought of by many as the father of the Harlem Renaissance. Howard excels in other fields as well—business, law, medicine, and divinity, to name a few. And the school is no stranger to sports, as anyone familiar with the Bisons and Lady Bisons ought to know.

    Housing Around The D.C. Area

Almost half of Howard students choose to live off campus, so you'll probably find yourself in good company once you decide you'd like to rent an apartment in Washington, D.C. Campus is just below the McMillan Reservoir; apartments in this area are expensive, but if you can manage it you'll be in for a treat, as they are luxurious, towering condominiums. You can also look farther off, and use your commute as an excuse to explore the city. Start your hunt with our helpful apartment search guide. Then you can get a feel for what the everyday college experience is like by checking out our college life blog.

    Transportation And Finding Entertainment

Going to Howard University is a great way to access the city of Washington, D.C. The school provides a special shuttle system, which travels from the main campus to smaller offshoots. The city subway runs from 5:30 a.m. to 12 a.m. on weekdays and from 6:30 a.m. to around 3 a.m. on weekends. And as for attractions, well, maybe you've heard that D.C. has a couple monuments kicking around. The Presidential Monuments at particularly beautiful at night when they're lit-up and less crowded. But you might be more interested in cosmopolitan nightlife, once you decide to wander off campus. Well, look no further than the aptly-named website Bar D.C., which can acquaint you with all those types of happenin' places.
