  • The University of Texas at Brownsville

    Your Move

The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College is well-known across the country for its chess program. But if even if you don’t know Bobby Fischer from Bobby Brown, you’ll receive a great education at this impressive institution. Located just one block from the Mexican border, The University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College is a racially diverse institution that celebrates the rich culture of the area. The campus is actually the grounds of a former US Army outpost; the school is as serious about education as the military is about walking in a straight line. More than 15,000 cadets…ahem…students attend this school, and do so with pride. You’ll find yourself chanting “Sting ‘em Hard” with fellow Scorpion fans sooner than you can say “4 a.m. energy drink-fueled cram session.”

    Off-Campus Freedom

Did you know that the University of Texas at Brownsville and Texas Southmost College’s Department of Music is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music? Whether you need a room big enough to store your tuba or just someplace where you can blast Tupac in peace, there are great apartments for rent around campus. 56% of those surveyed by College Prowler about Brownsville off-campus housing said that, though price and availability may vary, “the added freedom is still worth it.” There are a few apartment complexes within walking distance of the campus, offering amenities like fitness centers and pools. Rent an apartment in one of these affordable complexes and you’ll have more money to spend on important stuff, like books, staplers, and gallons of burnt orange and navy blue face paint. Food, Fashion, and Flamingos

Hanging out at the Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy Research might be fun, but the city of Brownsville offers great restaurants and attractions when you need a break from gravitational wave data analysis. Celebrate a Scorpions win with some beer and wings at Brownsville’sBuffalo Wild Wings location. If an ecstatic roommate happens to coat your favorite shirt in wing sauce, you can always head over to the Sunrise Mall and pick up a new one. Whether you need to do research or you just want to give a shout out to a lowland gorilla, a day at the Gladys Porter Zoo never disappoints. You’ll have no problem getting to all these places, as the Brownsville Metro makes several stops on campus daily. Just don’t act like an ape when you get onboard.
