  • University of Baltimore

    University of Baltimore

Despite a distinguished and fairly general name, the University of Baltimore is quite a small college, with around 3,000 postgraduates and 2,400 undergraduates. Degrees here are organized into the School of Business, School of Law, and College of Liberal Arts.

Baltimore was originally founded as a tobacco trade port, but is now a major center for tourism and travel. It has a temperate climate, being classified in the same zone as Florida (although without the beaches). Baltimore's architecture is one of its most pleasing, and also surprising points, with buildings created by Mies van der Rohe, John Russell Pope and Benjamin LaTrobe.

With an excellent walk score of 95 out of 100, Baltimore is one of the country's most easily walkable cities. You barely have to put your shoes on and you can be at restaurants, grocery stores and coffee shops close by to UB. For a lunchtime break, you can hit the nearby clothing and music stores as well as movie theaters or fitness centers, all within an easy quarter mile walk.

    Neighborhoods for Baltimore Students

Johnston Square, Midtown Belvedere and Seton Hill are all neighborhoods quite close to University of Baltimore. All have roughly the same population density, with 14,000 to 15,000 people per square mile, however Seton Hill has a slightly lower median income and slightly more affordable housing.

Baltimore is one of the more expensive cities to rent an apartment in, with studio apartments starting at $630 per month. At UB you are fairly close to the center of town, though, so you have quite a variety of apartments to choose from while retaining easy access to school. You should budget at least $900 for a one-bedroom apartment. A Neighborhood for Everyone

Being close to the center of town at UB, you have access to not only the best education in town, but the best education in how to have a good time! Club Charles and Illusions Magic Bar and Lounge are good for relaxing nightlife in Baltimore with good tunes - and if you'd like to be part of the tunes, check out Howl at the Moon's karaoke nights.

There are hundreds of highly recommended places in Baltimore to eat - why not try one of the city's more eclectic but most highly regarded choices, like The Helmand's Afghan cuisine, Korean at the Geisha Sushi Bar, or Roy's Restaurant for Hawaiian.

Are you a genius? Then you are probably looking to apply to top schools like Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Are you a fan of John Waters films? Then you are probably looking to live off campus in Baltimore.

    Baby Geniuses

Remember that movie Baby Geniuses? Well, all those babies went to John Hopkins University. The professors in the medical department challenged the baby doctor. The baby genius engineer found that his baby skills were not enough to make it in the engineering department, and the baby econ major had to grow up pretty fast to compete with his college-aged peers. It’s true, academic competition at John Hopkins is pretty tough, but I guess when you are going up against babies, it’s not that bad. The other thing that isn’t bad is all the research being done by professors that students can take part in and learn from. Besides working hard all the time, students find that the surrounding city of Baltimore is a playground of fun that they can enjoy and live in.

    Good Morning, Baltimore

If you’ve seen your fair share of movies, you might remember the part in the musical Hairspray when Tracy steps off the bus and sings “Good morning, Baltimore.” Tracy has reason to rejoice in this city, full of culture, excitement, and a groovy vibe baby, ya! This why many students, especially upper-classmen, choose to live in off-campus apartments. To see musicals like Hairspray, or experience other artsy things, check out the neighborhood of Mount Vernon. For off-campus college livin’, check out Charles Village. The urban-ness is endless and our apartment guide will help you find an area and an apartment that is right for you. Apartments suited for students in Baltimore are affordable and easy to find.
