About Fort Myers, FL

Fort Myers, Florida is part of a rapidly growing city center along the state's Gulf Coast. Florida's western beaches have always been a popular destination for anyone seeking a little relief from the cold and Fort Myers has made a name for itself as just such a destination. Notably, Thomas Edison and Henry Ford wintered in town in their large estates, which are now open for the public to share and enjoy.
  • Florida Gulf Coast University

Florida Gulf Coast University, home of the Eagles, is a relatively new college that sprang up in 1991 in the southern area of Fort Myers, Florida. This public university has a great business and hospitality management program, which is a popular major among its students. Beyond just your general and major requirements, FGCU really stresses environmental studies. This green school requires all of its students to read up on ecology and preservation of the environment before graduation day. It’s a small school with small classes, so don’t shy away from getting to know your professors during their office hours.

    Living Off-Campus

Like many other universities, students at FGCU are finding their own places to rent after freshman year. 70-75% of all the undergraduates are living off-campus and there are a lot of affordable options available in our listings. The downside is that the locations of these places are scattered across the city, but getting to and from campus should be no big deal; there is a campus shuttle called the Eagle Express that can bring you around. Many of the rentals around Fort Myers have great views overlooking the waterfront. If you’re renting for the first time, read up on how you can optimize your apartment search. Trust me, it’ll save you from pulling out your hair when you should really be focusing on midterms and finals.

    The Sunshine State

To be honest, life in Florida is pretty cool. It’s like being on vacation all year round when you are in school. Or at least the weather thinks so. The days are warm, the people are friendly, and the city of Fort Myers is mellow enough that you can really take a step back to enjoy your life. The city is small, but you’ll find all that you really need here with The Gulf Coast Town Center and Miromar Outlets, both shopping centers near campus. Also, try to take weekend trips to Naples Beach if you really want a getaway.

  • Edison State College

How many Edison State College students does it take to change a light bulb? Just one, hopefully, but that is beside the point. Edison State College, ESC for short, is named after the infamous Thomas Edison, inventor of the electric light bulb, the phonograph, and the motion picture camera. During his lifetime, Edison lived in Fort Myers, Florida during the winter months, so he wouldn’t have to freeze to death in New Jersey.

Florida is known for its year-round sunshine and warm, beachy weather. When you’re not buried in books at the library, walk to the water and relax on the sandy beaches. Take a load off your shoulders; you owe it to yourself. Plus, the money you’ll be saving on tuition at ESC will be the money you’ll be spending on the nights and weekends. Downtown Fort Myers has got its own thing going on. For nightlife, you’ll find bars bars bars: cocktail bars, wine bars, pubs, themed bars (see: The Cigar Bar) and other places to celebrate the end of a midterm or an A on an essay
