About Richmond, KY

As the third largest city in the Bluegrass Region, Richmond is a hub for business and recreation in south central Kentucky. The city received its name when Revolutionary War soldier Colonel John Miller founded it in 1798. He decided to name this new piece of land after his hometown of Richmond, Virginia. Since then, however, Richmond, Kentucky has definitely taken this name and made it its own, growing to become the state's seventh largest city.

    Lots of Majors

There are more than 150 registered student organizations at Eastern Kentucky University, including EKU Ballroom Dance Club. Whether you’ve got moves like Fred Astaire or all the grace of a drunken gorilla, you’ll love it at EKU. This affordable university’s motto is "Where students and learning come first.” “Eastern,” as it is commonly known, offers small class sizes, so you’re sure to receive a top-notch education (even if you stay up all night watching Adult Swim with your roommate). With 168 degree programs to choose from, you’ll have no problem switching majors if your interests change from creative writing to, say, aviation administration.

    Pajama Paradise

If you’re a bit over group activities, you’ll want to look for off-campus housing around Eastern Kentucky University. Luckily, there are apartments in multi-unit complexes available, so you’ll never have to worry about weekly bonding time or finding clumps of hair in the bathroom sink—well, not other people’s hair. Start looking for off-campus housing at the end of the school year, when everyone’s moving out. 73% of those surveyed by College Prowler said that off-campus housing at EKU is worth the move, due to the added freedom (you know, like being able to walk around in Star Wars pajamas without embarrassment). Be sure to take a look at our college life guide if you need help finding a roommate who’s down with Yoda.

    Cathartic Attractions

No matter how good of an idea it may seem, you should probably hold off from impromptu Super Soaker fights at “the Corner.” There are plenty of de-stressing activities available around EKU’s campus. Want to meet your fellow classmates and unleash pent-up term paper rage? If you don’t have a car, hop in a cab or a Richmond Transit Service bus and visit a popular Richmond bar, like Madison Garden Bar & Grill or Paddy Wagon Irish Pub. Tired of watching talking cat videos with your roommate? Go see a real film at the Richmond Centre. While you’re there, pick up some maroon-and-white duds to show how much you love EKU and all its cathartic attractions. Save the water gun action for waking up your roommate Monday morning.
