About Opa Locka, FL

Located in the southwestern tip of Florida, Opa-Locka, Florida is a tiny town with a big name. Situated in the north section of Miami-Dade County in southern Florida, Opa-Locka got its name by shortening its original Seminole Indian name of “Opa-Tisha-Wocka-Locka,” meaning “wooden hammock in a swamp.” Founded in 1926 by Glenn Curtiss, a famous aviation pioneer, Opa-Locka has been the site of renowned aviation moments in history including Amelia Earhart’s famous trip around the world (she took off just south of Opa-Locka,) and was a regular stop of the Graf Zeppelin commercial German airship around the 1930s. Opa-Locka has a total area of 4.5 square miles and offers 2 lakes, 3 parks, and a general aviation airport, the Opa-Locka Airport.
