About Fairbanks, AK

  • University of Alaska Fairbanks

    "Ad Summum"

Directly translated, University of Alaska Fairbanks’s Latin motto means "to the top." And to the top it is, because you ain't gettin' much further north than Alaska. But AUF can also claim the top for its individuality. It gives students a unique education by encouraging them to think outside the classroom. Explore your surroundings with the Outdoor Adventures program. UAF is a leader in outer-space-research, coastal conservation, and Arctic biology. It houses several major research institutions such as the Agricultural and Foresty Experiment Station and the Geophysical Institute, and the Institute of Marin Science, so get ready to get your hands dirty and put your eye to the microscope. Whatever they choose, UAF students choose active learning over passive learning, even if that just means frequenting the UAF's stellar climbing wall everyday. Whether in the classroom, on the alpine slopes, or in the temperate rain forests, students are gaining an education that they won't get anywhere else.

Nanooks in the East and Nanooks in the West

Fairbanks is no great walking city, so unless you settle right next to campus on Tanana Drive or University, chances are you'll either have to take the bus or drive to school. But don't worry little Nanooks, we'll find you a place to live! To the east we have Shannon Park, a favorite among families. To the west we have the University West neighborhood or Tanana Drive, closer to the school and more populated with students. If you live on Tanana Drive and you're a birdlover, you'll get a kick out of living close to Smith Lake. For floundering around Fairbanks, take the Metropolitan Area Commuter System (MACS), the public bus system for Fairbanks North Star Borough. All-day passes are $3, but UAF students ride for free. Several of the lines go to UAF. Alaska Direct Bus Lines goes a number of places in Alaska. The Alaska Railroad is also a great way to see the state and is an adventure in and of itself.

    Wherefor art thou, Sleddog?

Why, gearing up for the mushing races, of course! When you've had your fill of quick canines, check out Fairbanks's Bard-a-thon for Shakespearian entertainment. Hosted by the Fairbanks Shakespeare Theatre, Bard-a-thon takes place in February. Put a couple more wrinkles in your brain by attending a Science for Alaska lecture. Lastly, end an evening with a trip to BIG-I, the oldest bar in Fairbanks.
