About Charleston, IL

  • Eastern Illinois University

    King of All Colleges

Old Main, a castle-like building constructed in the Gothic revival style, is Eastern Illinois University’s official symbol. Like ESU’s most famous structure, you’ll be powerful, admired, and built-to-last (just not made out of limestone). Located in Charleston, Illinois, this great state university offers 47 undergraduate, 27 graduate, and seven post-baccalaureate certificate programs. Whether you major in Anthropology or Communication Disorders, you’ll receive a top-notch education (and be wearing blue and grey like it’s the new black) at EIU. U.S. News & World Report has consistently named EIU one of the best Midwestern public universities in its class. With an enrollment of approximately 12,179 students, you’ll have no problem making friends or organizing a mass pillow fight at Booth Library (you didn’t hear that from us).

    Affordable Apartments

Eastern Illinois University boasts more than 150 student organizations, including DubClub and Harry Potter RSO. If you need a place to store your turntable and/or Quidditch broom, you’ll find just what you’re looking for off-campus—in fact, 71% of students at EIU say that it’s totally worth renting an apartment. You’ll find very affordable multi-unit complexes in the area, and if you’re willing to drive ten minutes, you’ll find great apartments in nearby towns like Shelbyville. Wherever you decide to rent, you’ll never have to deal with overbearing RAs or dining hall pizza. Check out our apartment hunting guide for help dealing with roommates prone to late-night show tunes.

    Party Like a Panther

When you get tired of studying for History of the United States to 1877, you’ll find plenty of places to blow off steam near Eastern Illinois University’s campus. While most Panthers get around by walking, you can always take a ride in a Panther Shuttle. Sick of eating mac and cheese every day? Head over to Panther Paw Bar & Grill for a bite and some professor-bashing. If you’re up for some relaxation after last night’s wild party, bring a buddy down to Jackson Avenue Coffeehouse for a cappuccino. Sick of watching cat videos with your roommates? Drive or bum a ride to nearby Mattoon and take in a flick at AMC Showplace Mattoon 10. You’ll have such a good time off EIU’s campus, not even a pop quiz on Monday morning could kill your spirit. Well, maybe not.
